Which Base is Best for Me?
Do I need a foundation with my Birch mattress?
The simple answer is yes. To properly support your Birch mattress, we recommend either a solid platform bed or a slatted foundation with no more than 5 inches between each slat.
Here’s why:
The Birch Natural Mattress and Birch Luxe Natural Mattress are both designed differently than the traditional innerspring mattresses most people may be used to.
Instead of using interwoven coil wires and a dense foam construction, the Birch natural mattresses rely on individually wrapped steel coils and latex layers to provide maximum comfort and minimize motion transfer. This difference in design, though, requires a few adjustments in the way you might think about support.
For both Birch mattress models, we recommend avoiding the use of a traditional box spring directly under your mattress. Instead, we suggest using either a solid platform bed or a slatted foundation with no more than 5 inches of space between each slat.
Here are a few great options from us that will ensure your Birch mattress is properly supported.
Birch Foundation
We created the Birch Foundation to take the place of traditional box spring and provide a complementary natural aesthetic for your sleep setup. It was designed with a kiln dried hardwood frame to provide sturdy support under your mattress and between each slat on the Foundation, there is approximately 3 inches of space, which means your mattress will be properly supported so you won’t experience any dipping or sagging.
Plus, with an 8-inch height and dimensions to match your Birch mattress, our Foundation can take the place of a traditional box spring and work perfectly either directly on the ground or on top of most standard metal bed frames.
The Birch Foundation includes an organic cotton cover that promotes breathability beneath your mattress and cinches tightly around the outside of the wood frame.

Birch Wood Frame
If you’re looking for a bit more height for your setup and a standalone support system, the Birch Wood Frame may be the answer.
Our Wood Frame is designed with premium maple, pine, and plywood, which offer great stability. The frame stands on its own and should not be used with the Foundation or any other support system. Your mattress should sit directly on top of the wood frame and will be supported by Southern Yellow Pine slats that are approximately 3.3” apart.
The Birch Wood Frame is 13 inches tall and has a clearance of 7.5” beneath the frame.
